Academic Mentoring
HighSight is looking for college graduates to support the students during one of three weekly sessions. Mentors focus on test preparation, study habits and organizational skills while assisting students with their assigned homework.
HighSight academic sessions have an academic focus. Teams of mentors work with groups of students, allowing volunteers to use their expertise in particular areas. Thanks to this format, mentors are able to support multiple scholars during each session.
Academic Sessions are scheduled throughout the school year:
| Tuesday | 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. |
| Wednesday | 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. |
| Saturday | 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m |
ACT/SAT Prep Courses
Often our students' college search is limited by their standardized test scores.
Volunteers have staffed our test prep workshops in the fall and winter for the seniors and the juniors, respectively. Anyone with experience in standardized test preparation is welcome to share their expertise.
Social Outings
HighSight's focus is on academics, but there are opportunities
throughout the year for mentors and students to interact in a more
social setting. Monthly outings to sporting events, plays, movies and
other activities are planned, and HighSight schedules social gatherings
for mentors get to know each other after tutoring sessions.
Financial Support
Eve of the Eve/Midsummer's Eve
Volunteers are needed for all facets of production for two of Chicago'spremier charity engagements. Both events are organized primarily by volunteers and require year-round assistance.
Individual/Corporate Sponsorship
Each of our scholars receive roughly $12,000 during their high school career. Donors help meet the balance of scholarship funds not met by fundraisers. A portion of our scholars are currently funded by individuals, foundations and corporations. Please contact HighSight Executive Director Mark Duhon if you are interested in providing financial support.
Each scholar's goal is to graduate from college. Many of our students
will be first generation collegians. Your aim is to help provide the tools
and strategies that will help them graduate.
In order to ensure success in high school and beyond,
our scholars commit to:
- Earning a place on at least the B honor roll.
- Attending academic sessions at HighSight.
- Participating in at least one extracurricular activity.
- Being an active member of HighSight by attending outings, trips and summer programs.
- Having a positive attitude. HighSight wants students who want to be here.
